Fitness Fashion: Spring Must-Have’s

Ah the first day of Spring! While we’re still buried in snow over here I can dream about brightly colored fresh gym attire! During my recovery I’ve spent a fair amount of time window shopping online and I’ve got some great finds to get you feeling inspired and ready to rock your workouts feeling fresh!

Fitness Fashion Spring

MPG Tank  | Beckons Capri | Patagonia Nine Trails Short | Soybu Bombshell Tank

One of my top must-have’s for Spring is the NEW Skora FIT. I’ve yet to try this shoe but my team mates have been describing this shoe as “running on a cloud” and “the best shoe ever!”. If you’ve been wanting to try out a minimalist shoe but are looking for a little more cushion than the FIT is for you. Skora’s website even has a feature that shows you how it will fit you!

SKORA FIT

All the clothing is from activewearusa.com, I love their selection and the bonus points you earn with each purchase is pretty awesome too! The first outfit is an MPG tank paired with some bright yellow bottoms that would look awesome with the bright yellow/silver SKORA FIT’s. The capri’s are made from an eco friendly material as well. They are tight fitting, featuring a roll-down waist that can be adjusted to sit any place on your waist or below and an 18″ inseam that hits at the top of the calf muscle. These are a key layering piece.

Soybu is another favorite of mine. I found my first piece while traveling last year and it’s one of my favorite tops! I love this white tank and I’d be comfortable wearing it in the gym or even for a casual day out – love pieces that have more than one use! How cute is the print on those shorts! Love the bright colors. Adding the pop of pink from the shoes makes this an adorable spring outfit!

Recovery Cocktail: L-Glutamine & BCAA’s

Speeding up the recovery process from the abdominoplasty is at the top of my to-do list lately, I really can’t do much else, recovery is my #1 job right now. I’ve been working with North Coast Naturals for a couple months and one of my favorite products is their L-Glutamine. Hemp seeds will always have my heart, but the Fermented L-Glutamine is great for recovery! They have no flavor or color so they mix perfectly into any drink you choose. I’ve been adding them to my BCAA’s, which prevent muscle breakdown while I’m sidelined in my recliner!

L-Glutamine Recovery Drink

So just what does L-Glutamine do for you? Here’s what the NCN website says about it…

What Is It Used For?
Supplementation of 100% pure L-Glutamine powder has been common for over 20 years beginning with use by athletes. Many studies suggest it helps with recovery, alleviating physical/mental stress, joint pain, and mental fitness. It has also been found to have a significant effect on the body’s rate of tissue repair. Glutamine can help to reduce depression, anxiety, irritability, moodiness, insomnia, and distress due to short bowel syndrome.
What does Glutamine do?

  •     Maintains the health of your intestinal tract
  •     Helps your body produce glutathione, a key antioxidant nutrient
  •     Ensures proper acid-base balance in your body
  •     Helps maintain your muscle mass
  •     Vastly improves recovery times from injury, surgery and exercise
  •     Increases resistance to colds – Glutamine is a primary immune system “booster”.
  •     Slows the aging process by increasing “youth hormone” – Youth and Immunity Booster Studies have shown 2 grams of L-Glutamine daily increased growth hormone levels by over 400%.
  •     Athletes note increased power and endurance.
  •     Participates in glycogen synthesis
  •     Provides nitrogen compounds for the manufacture of nucleotides which are used to make DNA and RNA.
  •     Helps maintain cell volume and hydration

Taking L-Glutamine after workouts or before bedtime, times when muscle tissue typically undergoes repair and recuperation can be particularly effective.

In addition to the L-Glutamine + BCAA drinks I’ve also been adding in a few extra protein shakes each day. I’m trying to hit between 100-120g of protein a day to make this recovery as quick as I can and properly fuel my body during this time! This week I have an appointment with my surgeon and I’m hoping to get the green light for light exercise clearance – wish me luck!

The Shoe Makes The Workout: SKORA Phase Review

It’s been a while since we talked shoes. Last year I found my perfect shoe in SKORA. When I’m not in cycling shoes you can find me in a pair of SKORA’s. My love affair began with the Form’s and I’m now on my second pair of the Phase. This is MY perfect shoe. I use this shoe for everything from treadmill running, assorted cardio machines, strength training and heck I’ve even used them for cycling before. This shoe fits like a slipper on my foot and when I’m strength training it allows me to feel more grounded and I feel gives me better balance and helps my form, allowing it to be more natural.

SKORA Phase Review

In all of my SKORA’s I do not wear socks – since 95% of my training is indoor socks aren’t necessary for me. When I wore traditional running shoes forgetting my gym socks was just about the same as forgetting your headphones – a workout buster! Many of my #RunReal team mates are long distance runners and have logged some serious miles in these shoes – we’re talking over 500+ miles and still going strong. I love how light on my feet these shoes make me feel and agility/speed work feels much easier as the shoes work with you and don’t get in your way.

Here’s the technical specs from the SKORA website:

PHASE is constructed using the latest lamination techniques, with a minimal single-layer mesh upper and laminated reflective details. With an asymmetric lacing system and unique IBR outsole, PHASE provides maximum performance with minimum weight and interference. Zero-drop, 11mm stack height.

PHASE is built on our revolutionary IBR (Injection Blown Rubber) platform. R02 pushes the boundaries of material technology. IBR offers better abrasion resistance, grip and compression-set than injected EVA with lower density and weight than rubber. This provides a runner with incredible ground feel and running comfort in an amazingly durable, flexible and lightweight complete package.

Love love the black Phase!

Love love the black Phase!

My black Phase’s are like the little black dress of my workout shoe wardrobe. They’re the perfect compliment to my crazy patterned pants. If you’re looking for these on the SKORA website they’re in the men’s section (you’ll need to size down about 1.5).

If you’re looking for your next pair of shoes SKORA has been a game changer for me and I think you’d love them!

**Disclosure: I am an ambassador for SKORA and receive complimentary shoes. This review however was not commissioned by SKORA and is not a required part of my contract. As always, I’m simply sharing because I believe in these shoes & the company.**

It’s All About The Music: Backbeat GO 2 Review

A few weeks ago I received an email from the friendly folks at Plantronics telling about their Backbeat GO 2 wireless headphones and offering me a pair for review. Since music is such a huge motivator for me I jumped at the chance to try these out. I keep my iPhone in a LifeProof case
which keeps it “lifeproof” but means it doesnt really fit in an arm band and more than that I’ve never liked having my phone on my arm and with the rowing machine and Jacob’s Ladder it’s tough to keep the phone anywhere but in my shirt and that’s just not too classy!

BackBeat GO 2 Wireless Headphones

BackBeat GO 2 Wireless Headphones

The corded headphone I have now deliver great sound but I find it annoying when using them for anything other than the treadmill. The issue of where to put my phone when I’m on the weights floor or doign the cardio as I mentioned before. Usually I can’t wear ear-bud style headphones as they never stay in but these came with a variety of heads and they fit my ears perfectly and don’t fall out! I wish I had an in-gym photo for you but they have a no photo policy and while it’s easy to sneek a treadmill picor something on the spin bike, gym selfies are pretty tough to snap without anyone noticing!

The case

The case

One really cool feature is the case is a portable charger for the headphones – you’re never going to be without tunes and you have a nice CLEAN place to store your headphones – not the bottom of your gym bag! If you’re like me and you’re at the gym during “office hours” and you don’t want anyone to know you’re not at your desk you can even take phone calls with these headphones on! When they are fully charged you get over 14 hours of listening time which should be plenty of gym time per week for anyone. However, if you forget to charge them plug into your portable case for 20 minutes and you’ll get 1 hour of listening time!

Whoops - should have cleaned them off!

Whoops – should have cleaned them off!

What I love about these ones is that they don’t have a hard back to them – just a short cord connecting them. I find this give you greater flexibility with how you want to wear them. Considering you’ll be wearing these at the gym you’d expect they hold up well to sweat and water – they have a special coating that protects the earbuds against sweat, moisture, and spills! These were SUPER easy to connect to my iPhone and I was up and going with them pretty quickly. When I’m not blasting tunes in the cycle studio I’m rocking out with these awesome headphone and no more wires to bother me!

These would make the perfect gift for the fitness lover or someone with big goals for 2014! I found them on Amazon.comfor around $85 with the charging case and it looks like they would arrive in time for gifting!

p.s. If you or sometone you know wants to melt away some pounds this winter don’t wait ’till January 1! Join my DietBet (starts 12/18) today and you could WIN some amazing prizes and there’s even a special early bird contest running until the 27th!

*Thanks to Plantronics for sending these awesome headphones over for review. I was given the set at no cost for review purposes but all opinions are my own and I wouldn’t share something with you I didn’t truly enjoy.*

FitGear Finds: ActivewearOutlet.com Review

A few weeks ago I discovered a cool new site called ActivewearOutlet.com while browsing twitter. Over the last few weeks I’ve been cleaning out my fit gear drawer(s) of things that are too big (yay!) so I’ve been looking for some awesome new finds to replace it! They were super kind and offered to send me an outfit to try out.

MPG Top from ActivewearOutlet.com

MPG Top from ActivewearOutlet.com

They also sent these adorable pants from Colosseum Breeze Tech 2 Capris. Originally they sent a large, which in all other brands fits perfectly, however, I needed to exchange these for a XL. When ordering be sure to check the size charts – I wear a Medium in Reebok and a Large in other brands so I thought it would be safe to order.

One thing I really like about ActivewearOutlet.com is that they carry Plus Size Fitness Gear! Usually when we’re starting out on our fitness journey it’s hard to find outfits that make us feel good about ourselves – now it even comes in cute colors! Good news for all my Canadian friends – they ship to you! You may have some customs fees but with the money you’ll be saving it’s worth it!

Love what you see on their website? You can WIN a piece of your choice! Can’t wait to see if you’ve won? Shop using promo code TREADMILLRUNWAY and you’ll save 10% off your order!
